Buy Israel Initiative - Beth Jacob Congregation

Dear Friends,

As a staunch religious Zionist community, and deeply troubled by the growing anti-Israel BDS (boycott, divestment, sanctions) movement, our Beth Jacob community is compelled to respond. Since the BDS movement uses economic means to harm the one vibrant democracy in the region, we need to respond by expressing our support of Israel in economic terms.

In this context, we are proud to announce our Beth Jacob BUY ISRAEL Initiative.

This initiative involves a concerted creative effort by our Beth Jacob community, in partnership with other organizational leaders, to buy and promote the purchase of Israeli goods. Along with the multitude of ways we support Israel, we feel that one of the best methods to combat those who seek to divest from Israel is for us to invest in Israel through our everyday lives. We have been in touch with vendors to facilitate the following concrete steps we are taking:

  • Snacks in our Kestenbaum Family Youth Department will now be Israeli products (to the extent possible).
  • Our Community Mishloach Manot on Purim consisted entirely of Israeli products.
  • As a vehicle to raise awareness about Israeli products, and inspired by the ACHI organization, we encourage each family to have one bowl/basket- a "klee" (Hebrew word for basket) in their home that can be placed on the counter/table/pantry to be reserved for an Israeli product(s) (See We are planning a youth event at which our children will design personalized baskets to serve as their family "klee."
  • We are considering the possibility of utilizing Beth Jacob space to serve as a hub for distribution of Israeli goods.
  • Wine Tasting events featuring Israeli wines, and Israel Fairs featuring goods or/and Israeli artists, are being considered. Stay tuned for details.
  • Our upcoming Modern Minds Wednesday night series finale will be a talk from Assemblyman Travis Allen who has spearheaded an effort to make sure that California's substantial financial might is divested from any company that chooses to boycott Israel.

We invite you to participate with us in our "Buy Israel" initiative. If you would like to be involved in coordinating any of the above, or have other ideas, please contact us. This initiative not only supports Israel in a practical way, it also serves as a symbol of our solidarity, which is an example that we hope many other communities will follow. Let's join together to make a difference for Israel.
